The best way to understand the mechanism and to get a glimpse of the plethora of goods being traded is to have a browse on Ebay auctions now, or simply sign up for an account.
To sign up at eBay click 'register'. Enter your personal details including a unique user ID, password and email address. Using a free email provider like Hotmail means you'll need to place a credit card number on file for ID purposes before you join. If you want to be able to sell as well as buy goods using eBay, you'll need to register as a seller.
You'll also have to choose how to pay eBay. eBay earns its money from sellers' fees. You can pay your fees via direct debit, or credit or debit card and now by PayPal (which they also own).
Accept eBay's user agreement if you're happy with it and you'll be a registered eBay member.
How to buy on ebay
A process known as 'proxy bidding' is used on eBay - you specify what you're willing to pay and eBay bids incrementally on your behalf until it reaches your maximum. Auctions are timed, and the highest bidder when the auction closes is the winner.
You can window shop by browsing eBay's listings by category from its homepage. Or, if you know exactly what you want, you can search by keyword.
How to sell on eBay
Once you've decided what you're selling the first step is to categorise the item using the drop down menus. Write an eye-catching, accurate, one-sentence title for your item. Note its condition, and be honest about any flaws. To make your listing stand out, you can resize your font, change its colour or add bullet points.
